Our Trip to Canada - Day 1

Even though we've been back from Canada for almost a week now, it's taken me longer than normal to get back into the swing of things.  Either way, here are the pictures from Day 1 in Canada.

PS - We left Friday afternoon and drove straight through, arriving at 3:30am.  Marcus was wonderful both when he was awake, and when he was asleep.  He was a great traveler. :)

First thing Saturday morning, he wanted to go see Sam and Emma (and baby "Wissa")

Emma was a wonderful big sister/cousin

Such a sweet picture of Emma

Just a swingin'

Marcus LOVED Sam's T-ball set

Sweet baby Alyssa, all ready for the Lion Safari

Grandma, Marcus, & Sam were checking out the map

Looking at some small monkeys

Greg & Alyssa at the elephant show

Marcus says the elephant was saying, "Hi Marcus!" in this picture.

Marcus, Daddy, & Emma at the Elephant Show

He talks about the elephant kicking the soccer ball even a week later.

Looks like one of the goats were getting a little frisky with Uncle Greg.

Daddy & Marcus (standing in goat poop)

We went on a bus ride through the property and saw ALL KINDS of animals.
We all swapped babies the whole ride.

He was also cutting an I-tooth, so his hands were CONSTANTLY in his mouth. (yes, we washed them after the petting zoo)

He loves his Aunt Lisa

Baby Alyssa LOVED her ice cream cone

We took a train ride & this may have been Marcus' favorite part.

Petting the camels on our way out.

Boat ride

He was absolutely wiped out when we got to the car.  He was asleep in less than five minutes.

My attempt at a smooth road trip

In three days we're packing up our car and driving between 13-14 hours up to Canada with a 22 month old. I've been all over the internet, asked friends, searched Pinterest, and read blogs and have come up with a few ideas to HOPEFULLY help make the ride a little smoother for not only Marcus, but for us.  On typical road trips (3 hours or less) we have the usual: books, kiddie music, snacks, water, and a search out the windows for dump trucks and diggers, etc.  But I doubt that will work for the whole trip.  Here are a few inexpensive things I came up with:

I took white paper circles and cut them into two pieces.  It's hard to tell in this picture, but I outlined the matching pieces in the same color glitter glue.  This will be one of those activities that he and I do in the back seat together.  I'll take one half and ask, "does this piece match it?" and go from there.

We're just in the beginning stages of Marcus recognizing colors, but I thought this was a cute idea.  You start with one circle with four colors and then find the matching clothes pin.  Again, he won't be able to do this alone, but it'll be a great teaching time for me to not only show him how to match the colors, but what the names of each color are.  I'm not sure how to do dark blue and light blue, though.

Luckily we already had finger puppets here at the house, but I was thinking of letting him play alone with these for part of the trip, seeing if he could recognize the animals or what he'd do with them.  Then at another time, we can play together, going over the animal names and sounds (if applicable).

It is good to know home-school moms because they know all the tricks!  Sweet Mrs. Mary gave us a bag full of magnetic letters that stick onto most baking sheets.  Again, he hardly knows his letters, but it's never too soon to show & tell him about each one, sing the ABC song, and even let him play independently sticking the letters to the pan.  They work on the bottom of the pan or inside it.

Even though we travel with a plethora of books regularly, I bought two "new" books at the consignment store.  The Safari book has animal pieces that come out and can stand up.  It's also helpful because we're going to the Lion Safari once in Canada.  It's a good source to introduce those animals we never talk about like "wombats."  The book on the right is a "My First Words" book that has magnetic pieces that stick to the magnetic pages.  Not only this, but we can use them with the cooking sheet as well.

Finally, this may be old-school, but we borrowed a lap desk for Marcus to use.  It has a hard surface on one side and a detachable pillow side on the other.  I'm going to bring ten or less crayons, a coloring book from the dollar store, blank paper, and maybe a marker or two.  The less the better because knowing us, he'll drop a crayon, I'll forget about it, and it'll melt in the sun & leave a big colorful spot in our car.  So *note to self* count the crayons.

With all that, I welcome any other comments or suggestions.  Most of the blogs I read online were ideas for OLDER children, so this was the best I could do with a not-even-two-year-old child.  We are either going to drive up over two days or drive later afternoon and into the night.  We've not yet decided.   So the more ideas I can pull out of my magic bag of tricks, the better.  Come one comment, come all! :)

National Cow Appreciation Day

Yesterday, Chick-Fil-A held it's annual, "Cow Appreciation Day."  If you partially dressed up like a cow, you got a free entree, but if you decked out in cow attire, you got a free MEAL!  Luckily, we have FOUR Chick-Fil-A's in Asheville, and even though we only ate 3 meals yesterday, we got 4 sets of free meals (we gave the last one away).
We started off at the one in the Biltmore Square Mall and took two girls from church with us.  They were beyond mortified because we were the only ones dressed like cows at this location.  After we ate breakfast we went to a place called the Health Adventure, which is in that same mall.  It's a health and science museum for children and it was super fun.
After we were finished playing I took them to a different location and we had lunch together as well.  The cow mascot was at this location and Marcus was absolutely terrified of it.  He literally jumped OUT of my arms to avoid Mr. Cow.  It was quite funny (for everyone else to watch).  I took the girls home and brought Marcus to OUR home for his nap.  Boy did he sleep well!  So well, in fact, that I had to wake him up to go get Matthew from school.
With Matthew safely at home, we met Mark back at our house & made plans for him to come eat supper with us.  He had to be dressed like a cow, too, ya know.  So we finished off his cow costume and went to the Asheville Mall location where there were a few more bovines in attendance.  We had supper together, enjoying the smiles people would give us as they noticed our white and black outfits.  When we were done, we went across the street (literally) to the walk-up outdoor Chick-Fil-A, ordered one more set of meals (since all 3 of us were dressed up, we got 3 meals again) and took it to a friend's house.
Needless to say, it was a super fun day but BOY did I eat too many calories!  I ate something different from the menu every day, but wow - I'd be ok if I didn't eat out for a month!  At least it was free, right?!  PS - Marcus obviously had chicken at every location, however he ate fruit & drank apple sauce instead of fries and soda pop (just to make you feel better).

The gloves were supposed to be hooves.

Balance Beam - wide to thin

This was Marcus' favorite station.  He could've stayed there all day.

Baseball station

You rolled the balls up to the top then arranged the pvc pipes so they'd come back down.  (notice the large mouth and teeth in the background).

Shopping cart - just Marcus' size

A view of the castle - This was a very cool place.

Tiffany made a cute little pirate!

They enjoyed pulling themselves around and around.

Since I used marker to color Marcus' shirt & it rained HARD both times in the morning, his shirt bled and got all over me.

Stop #3 for Marcus, #1 for Mark

I love my boys!

Stop #4 - walk-up window

The things we'll do for free chicken.

Cutie Pie

We ended our day showing Marcus how this whole "eating chickens" things works.  They, however, were less than impressed with his shirt.

Beautiful sky on the way home.

Bath Paint

I've tried making bath paints before, but either Marcus was too young for it or I let him have too much at once, because it didn't go as planned in my head the last time.  THIS TIME, I let Marcus help me make it, we talked about it, he stirred it, etc.  When it was time for his bath tonight I stripped him down and let him "paint" the bath walls before actually bathing him.  It rinsed right off the bath walls and for added fun, Marcus has blue bath water and bubbles while he played.

Baby Wash + Corn Starch + Food Coloring = Fun for Marcus :)

You can see where he "helped" and dumped one spoonful of corn starch outside the bowl.

A college friend came to town

On Monday, I got a call Tynisha, a dear friend from college.  It had been probably a couple of years since we've been in touch, for whatever reason, but luckily she was driving through town and wanted to hang out.  She has a 4 year old daughter named Addison and she is just a DOLL!  Both Tynisha and Addison came early in the afternoon, had supper with us, and even spent the night!  Mark took both Marcus and Addison outside so T and I could talk and it was just like we were in college again - only we were older, more "seasoned," and now we were mothers.  It was an absolute blessing to visit with her and not only that, but Marcus REALLY enjoyed Addison.  They did puzzles together, ran in circles, and just were great friends almost immediately.  Here are a few pictures from their visit and of Marcus this past week.

When Tynisha called, we were outside painting.

He was saying, "Cheese"

Tynisha reading Marcus the new book she brought him.

Putting puzzles together, another sweet gift from Addison & Tynisha.

She was trying to teach him to stand on his head.

College friends with our sweet children.

Daddy reading Marcus his favorite bedtime book, "How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?"

Snazzy new church outfit - 3T!

We're just starting to do crafts together.  This one did NOT end well.

Sweet Stinker

Last Friday, our Mama's Prayer group came over.  We had 11 total kids, but the oldest 2 babysat the younger ones in the basement while us mamas prayed for our children upstairs.  The two babies were crawling on the floor when I took this picture.  WHAT A BLESSING!

Marcus-isms

Here is a list of our favorite top ten Marcus-isms.  They're much cuter in person, but I'll do my best to spell out how it sounds when he does it himself.

10) ah-gay-ur = aligator
9) chock-it = chocolate (as in chocolate milk or a chocolate chip that he gets if he pees in the potty)
8) Mat-too = Matthew (the name of the little boy we take to daycare each day)
7) Baby Wissa = Baby Alyssa (his first cousin)
6) Ash-ee Ty-sun = Ashley & Tyson (a mom who keeps childcare at the gym & her son, Tyson, who's one year older than Marcus.  They're big buddies)
5) beeeeeeeeeg DIG-guuuuur = big digger (he can spot these things a mile away)
4) ha-yah-you-yah = halelujah
3) Mommy tiss it = Mommy kiss it (when he has an owie or boo-boo)
2) Mommy hode jew! = He's saying Mommy hold you, but he means hold ME (he typically says this one when he's in trouble & he's working on my soft side)
And the #1 favorite thing Marcus is saying right now that cracks me up every time he says it is!!!.....

1) see-you-a-ur = see you later! (seriously, it's waaaay cuter in person)

This child is alll about baseball.  Pajamas, hat, bat, ball, glove, Braves.  He LOVES baseball (it's not just us making him- he asks for it).
